Beginner Basics for Pastel Artists

These are some beginner supplies for aspiring pastel artists. I have listed pastel sets first that are a good buy for the quality. I always recommend half stick sets whenever possible. I have listed "papers" that are reasonably priced. I prefer "sanded" surfaces but Canson makes a good unsanded paper that works well. I also make my own surfaces using watercolor paper and clear gesso. I have many Youtube videos showing the process. I have also included some watercolor sets. Watercolor works great for underpaintings on water-friendly surfaces.
