The history of sunglasses stretches back centuries. Indigenous peoples of North America and northern Asia created snow goggles from flattened walrus or caribou ivory in the 13th century. Roman Emperor Nero used cut emeralds to watch gladiator fights. Ancient Chinese used flat panes of smoky quartz to protect the eyes from glare. Crookes lenses and UV protection were introduced in 1913 and 1899 respectively. Sunglasses became a popular fashion accessory since the 1930s.
