The book "Let's Get Physical" by Danielle Friedman chronicles the
history of women's exercise culture. At the beginning of the
twentieth century, sweating was considered "unladylike," and
physical exertion was thought to cause women's uterus to fall out.
However, a few fitness pioneers paved the way for change, and each
subsequent decade saw the birth of a fitness movement, including
post-war workouts, barre workouts, jogging, aerobics and weight
training, and yoga. The book also spotlights trailblazers who
transformed exercise from a beauty tool into a source of
empowerment.
