Women have played golf regularly since the 16th century, with Mary, Queen of Scots, being the first female to play. The Ladies' Club of St. Andrews was formed in 1867, marking the first women's golf club in history. The Ladies Golf Union (LGU) and the American Ladies Golf Association (ALGA) were founded in 1893 and 1897, respectively, and these early organizations paved the way for the Women's Professional Golf Association (WPGA) in 1944 and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in 19502. Today, women continue to make their mark on the greens, carrying forward this rich legacy.
