Early Life of Mohammed Zahir Shah

Mohammed Zahir Shah was born on October 15, 1914, in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was the son of Mohammed Nadir Shah, who later became the king of Afghanistan. Zahir Shah grew up during a period of significant social and political change within his country.

The Legacy of Zahir Shah's Reign

Becoming King

In 1933, at the young age of 19, Zahir Shah ascended to the throne after the assassination of his father, King Nadir Shah. His reign lasted until 1973, making him the last king of Afghanistan. The End of Monarchy

Though he ruled for several decades, Zahir Shah’s reign ended in a coup led by his cousin, which resulted in the abolition of the monarchy in 1973. He spent the subsequent years in exile but returned to Afghanistan in 2002, where he was welcomed as the 'Father of the Nation.'
